The World Health Organisation has declared the Monkeypox disease a global health emergency.
The World Health Organization has released a statement on the monkeypox outbreak. The WHO activated its highest alert level, warning that the fast-growing epidemic is a Public Health Emergency of International Concern.
Dee Black news reports that Monkeypox, according to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, is a rare viral zoonotic infectious disease that is endemic in certain areas of Africa. Monkepox is a viral disease caused by the Monkeypox virus, which belongs to the same family of viruses as Smallpox and Vaccinia.
The WHO Director-General,Tedros Ghebreyesus addressed the press to address the rise in Monkeypox cases and noted that the decision was made as a result of this.
"We have an outbreak that has spread around the world rapidly, through new modes of transmission, about which we understand too little,” Tedros said. “For all of these reasons, I have decided that the global Monkeypox outbreak represents a Public Health Emergency of International Concern.”
16,000 cases of Monkeypox were reported in more than 70 countries so far this year, according to WHO data. The number of confirmed infections has increased by 77% between late June and early July.This growth looks to only continue with current rates.
According to the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control, in 2022 there have been 101 reported cases of Monkeypox. This is the highest number since the disease emerged in 2017.
